First of all let me explain how this all began. We as a family have felt something was missing from the family, and the kids have been asking for a dog for quite a while now, but we were unable to afford the expense. The kids were told that we would look at getting a dog once we got ourselves sorted, but it just seemed too far in the future and they cannot comprehend time frames.

So when we heard that Assistance Dogs Australia were looking for puppy raisers, I looked further into it. Assistance Dogs Australia entrust you with a puppy, they give you its food, they pay for all the vet bills and should you need to go away on holiday and not be able to take the dog with you, they will arrange for a puppy sitter at no cost to you. What is the catch you ask? Well it is that at about 18 months old you have to hand it back so it can continue with its training, get assessed and the be able to be handed over to someone who has a disability and is in great need of the dogs assistance, oh and that once a week you would need to take it to training and of course during everyday life be consistent with the dog training guide that they have instructed you to do.

The thought of being able to provide a service to someone that was less fortunate than ourselves, and could not be independent without the help from the dog, for which we take for granted sometimes. So for them to have one of these very special dogs will give them that freedom.

So after sitting down with the kids and explaining that we could get a dog, but that we would have to give it back once it grew up we decided to submit our application and within a month we had an interview and a house inspection, we were put on the list to receive a puppy.

In the meantime while waiting we have done two B&B’s as they call it. This is where on a Friday afternoon you pick up a dog from the kennels that is about 18-24 months old and take it home so the dogs can experience a home environment and have a little holiday from their extensive training before they get handed over to someone who is in great need for a online dog trainer service or a companion.

After all this it was official and we could start our countdown to raising our Assistance Dog. It is now a week to go before we get delivery of our adoptive 9 week old Black Labrador. The kids have not stopped asking when the dog is going to arrive and each morning they still say “Is he coming today?”

So if you would like to follow our story about raising an Assistance dog and who knows maybe even implement the training in helping your own dog become more of a companion and an obedient dog rather than a back yard barking pest.

See you all soon.
